Statement of intent for Maths/ Vision Statement for Maths

At Fritwell C of E Primary School, Mathematics is planned to enable all children to grow and learn together with God.


At Fritwell, we have adopted a mastery approach to teaching and learning in mathematics in order to deliver the three aims of the National Curriculum: fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Mastery involves knowing how and why mathematics works; it means being able to use mathematics knowledge in new and unfamiliar situations. To support children in achieving this, we use White Rose and NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) resources. These are used to both support and challenge children’s understanding, in line with the expectations of the National Curriculum. We expect most children to move through this programme of study at broadly the same pace. Teachers will make decisions about when to progress based on the security of children’s understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Children who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier concepts will consolidate their understanding through additional practise and support before moving on.

In EYFS, children’s mathematics learning is on-going and is assessed against the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. At Fritwell, we give children a range of real and purposeful opportunities to develop their understanding of mathematics.  Children are encouraged to use, talk about and explore mathematics in a positive environment. We use practical resources like Numicon and base ten frames as well as pictures and models to master key concepts.


By the end of a child’s learning journey at Fritwell, they will be able to demonstrate:

  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† A deep understanding of maths and number.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† A positive and resilient attitude towards mathematics and an awareness of the fascination of mathematics.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Competence and confidence in mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† An ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† A range of learning strategies: working both collaboratively and independently.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Fluency in mathematics where children can express ideas confidently and talk about the subject using mathematical language.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† An understanding of the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† A responsible and independent learning attitude.


In order to achieve these outcomes for all children, our Maths Curriculum aims:

  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† To provide interesting and well-planned lessons, where children continually build on the knowledge they have already mastered which promote the children‚Äôs enjoyment of mathematics and provide a foundation for enthusiastic lifelong learning.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† To develop children‚Äôs mathematical thinking and conceptual understanding by:
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬† using concrete manipulatives (objects) and pictorial representations (pictures), before moving to abstract symbols (numbers and signs);
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬† giving children opportunities to explain or justify their mathematical reasoning using correct mathematical vocabulary;
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬† providing children with plenty of opportunities to solve a variety of problems with differing representations and make rich connections across mathematical ideas.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† To secure children‚Äôs knowledge and accuracy when recalling number facts
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† To deepen the understanding of all children by covering fewer topics in greater depth not 'climbing' the curriculum as quickly as possible.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† To help children acquire and apply the mathematical skills necessary for solving problems, not only in the maths lesson, but also in science and other subjects, in everyday life situations, in their future learning and in the workplace.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† To develop children‚Äôs confidence and resilience in Mathematics so they can reach their full potential.


As a result of the teaching, learning opportunities provided and well planned and progressive curriculum:

  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Children demonstrate a deep understanding of maths, including a secure knowledge of key number facts.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Children display a positive and resilient attitude towards mathematics and an awareness of the fascination of mathematics.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Each child achieves objectives (expected standard) for year group.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Children have developed the flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of maths.
  • ¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Children have developed the ability to recognise relationships and make connections in maths lessons.

Mathematical concepts or skills are mastered when a child can show it in multiple ways, using the mathematical language to explain their ideas, and can independently apply the concept to new problems in unfamiliar situations.
