Religious Education

RE is embedded throughout school life with Collective Worship taking place daily. Children are taught Religious Education (RE) once a week as well as exploring religious themes through worship. Teachers follow the Oxfordshire Agreed Syllabus for RE. 50% of the RE curriculum covers Christianity using the Understanding Christianity resource materials.  In addition to this, the children study other major world faiths: Islam, Judaism Sikhism and Hinduism using Discovery RE or units from the Diocesan scheme of work.  Christianity is taught on a 2-year rolling programme, while other major religions are taught annually across the whole school.  Children are taught using a variety of resources and experiences and each unit is centred on a ‘Big Question’.  This question is then explored through personal reflection, research and finding out about religion and finally evaluating using critical thinking.  Children are encouraged to become philosophical thinkers, reflecting upon religion and what it means to the world around us and to them as individuals.
